Detailed Description: Humuhumunukunukuapua'a has a diamond-shaped body with armor-like scales. A dark stripe crosses their silver sides and belly. Their fins are pale blue. They are called a triggerfish because of their sharp, spike-like dorsal fin. The teeth are blue and are set closely together inside its chubby mouth. When fleeing from predators, it makes a grunting sound, which can be a call to warn other triggerfish. Did you know that this fish sleeps on its side at night? This fish is sturdily built and reaches about 10 inches in length. Habitat: It is found throughout the Indo-Pacific region. It is found in shallow outer reef habitats, often on basalt reefs. Organism’s diet: It feeds on seaweed and bottom-dwelling invertebrates as well as algae, small crustaceans, worms, brittle stars, snails, and sea urchins. |
